LEADERSHIP POSITONSArts & Humanities Learning Community Peer MentorDuring the 2012-13 academic year, the School of Arts and Humanities will offer nine different year-long Learning Communities for incoming freshmen. Each Learning Community will consist of 60-120 students and two to three faculty members. In addition, each community will have a different theme. [Read more] Community Services AdvisorCommunity Service Advisors (CSAs) are responsible for mentoring, advising, and setting boundaries with students who live in the Residential Community. They are trained to respond to emergencies, mediate resident conflicts, make referrals to appropriate campus resources, provide monthly educational and social activities, uphold Residential Community standards and policies, and build communities of respect and caring within a diverse group of individuals. Job expectations include, but are not limited to: on-call weekend and weekday duty (varies by neighborhood) and service desk coverage, weekly staff meetings, weekly in-service training, weekly supervision meetings, and being a campus leader and role model. [Read more]Freshman Interest Group Peer AdvisorOne of the signature points of the Freshman Interest Group (FIG) Program is the utilization of Peer Advisors who play a critical role in connecting the classroom to the living room. Each FIG will have one Peer Advisor. This is a year-long commitment. In the fall, the Peer Advisor will be required to fulfill the role of a Peer Mentor in a specialized section of University 102, but also to set-up outside of the class field trips, events with faculty members and study groups. These specialized FIG sections of University 102 will cover the traditional Univ 102 themes, but will only be taught by a faculty member and the Peer Advisor. In the Spring, the Peer Advisor will be required to independently teach a weekly one-unit seminar. [Read more]Peer Mentor for STEM FYEStudent will assist in efforts to attract and retain more SSU Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) majors by assisting with efforts outlined in the recently awarded NSF Grant: "S3: STEPping up STEM at SSU." [Read more]Sauv CommUNITY Co-op Team LeaderBy joining Sauvignon CommUNITY, students seek and commit to active involvement in cooperative (Co-op) teams, which are designed to foster positive community, investment, and pride in the students' living environment. Students choosing to live in Sauvignon CommUNITY will be required to participate as a member of a Co-op Team. The Co-op Team Leader will work in a specific building in conjunction with the Community Service Advisors and one or two other Co-op Team Leaders. This team of CSAs and Co-op Team Leaders play a critical role in helping residents to realize ownership of their community. To effectively implement and manage the Sauvignon CommUNITY, each Co-op Team Leader will work with their students to educate them about their respective Co-op Team and to put on programs for their community. [Read more]Stretch Peer MentorStudents who score below a 147 on the English Placement Test (EPT) will take English 100A & 100B, also known as a stretch course. The class curriculum provides supportive, instruction in the advanced academic literacy skills necessary for college-level work. Course content includes training in college-level analytical reading skills and expository writing, with particular emphasis on persuasive writing and research skills. Students who score into the stretch program and who are not part of MOSAIC, FIG, EOP, Hutchins, Univ 150, STEM or the Arts & Humanities learning community, will automatically be enrolled in a one-unit Univ 102 course in the fall semester that will be taught by their same English 100A instructor. [Read more]Summer Bridge LeaderParticipate in the check-in and checkout procedures for Summer Bridge students. Provide guidance and supervision during their participation in the program. Enforce policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of participants. Provide conflict resolution when necessary. [Read more]Summer Orientation LeaderSummer Orientation Leaders (O Leaders) are the first point of contact for new students and their parents. O Leaders are responsible for facilitating a successful transition to the University by providing key services and support in the delivery of SSU's Summer Orientation Program. O Leaders assume positions of leadership and involvement in all aspects of the Orientation program. [Read more]UNIV 102 Peer MentorPeer Mentors will participate as a member of a two-person team, whose purpose is to contribute to the retention of students by role modeling, advising, and providing peer contact/support during the academic year. As a member of the mentoring team Peer Mentors will build a relationship between the students, faculty members, and staff. [Read more]UNIV 150 Peer MentorThe Freshman Year Experience (FYE) program is a multidisciplinary two-semester lecture/seminar designed for first-time first-year students. One hour of weekly lecture and four hours of weekly seminar, discussion, and advising address a variety of topics that interconnect issues in contemporary society with personal identity and student life. The course builds critical thinking, reading, writing, oral communication skills, information literacy, and student development, while also serving as an introduction to academic disciplines and the General Education Program at Sonoma State University.Advising and Career PeersAcademic Advising and Career Peers are a highly qualified team who provide General Education and career advice for all students. This position includes one to one drop-in sessions to answer basic academic advising questions, assist students with major exploration and job search. The Advising Peers review students' resumes, cover letters and assist with interview preparation. The peers conduct over 50 presentations a semester in academic and residential settings; including Interview Preparation, Choosing a major, General Education pattern, Registration Review and Resume Writing. Due to the in-depth knowledge required for this position, the Career and Advising Center is seeking Peer Advisors that have at least one year of Student Leadership experience.[Read more] |
