Matthew Lopez-Phillips is the Acting Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Sonoma State University. Mr. Lopez-Phillips earned his Master's of Science in College Student Development and Counseling from Northeastern University and holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of the Pacific. He completed graduate coursework in Counseling Psychology and College Student Development and attended The New Institute on Social Justice Education at the University of Oklahoma. Currently, Mr. Lopez-Phillips is working on his Doctorate in higher education Leadership and Change at Fielding Graduate University. Matthew Lopez-Phillips is involved in national organizations including the Association for Student Conduct Administration where he served in several capacities including serving on the board of directors.

Mr. Lopez-Phillips strives to ensure Sonoma State students have the highest quality experiences both inside and outside the classroom. As a first-generation college student from a multicultural background (Castilian Spanish, Native American, Filipino, Irish and English), Mr. Lopez-Phillips knows firsthand the challenges students face. These parts of his identity provide insight, empathy, and affinity for Sonoma State students and serve as a strong motivator for the work he does. "Helping students succeed" is not only the motto of the division - it is Mr. Lopez-Phillips' personal commitment to each student at Sonoma State University. Tangible evidence of his personal commitment to students includes serving as the advisor for numerous student clubs, and currently serving as advisor to Black Scholars United.
