Self Directed Career Planning

Welcome to the Self Directed Career Planning site! If you are unsure about your career path, what to do with your life, or even where to begin, you are in the right place.

The Self Directed Career Plan is based on the
Six Steps to Career Planning.

Follow each of the following steps in order and take time to complete each exercise. Print the worksheets, do the exercises and if you need further explanation, please bring them to a Career Advisor in Salazar 1070.

It is important to remember that this is a cyclical process. Choosing a career is not a one-time decision. Take your time, be honest, have fun, and good luck!

Step 1 - Lets begin!

The first step involves gathering information about yourself to assist you in making a decision about a career

Step 2 - Know yourself

You should develop an understanding of self including values, interests, aptitudes, abilities, personal traits, desired life style, and become aware of the interrelationship between self and occupational choices.

Step 3 - Academic and Career Options

This step allows you to investigate the world of work in greater depth, narrow a general career direction into a more specific one, and declare a major.

Step 4 - Decisions... Decisions... Decisions...

Evaluating career choices is not always easy. It's entirely possible that you have more than one perfect job. You may have a combination of three good matches or you may even get to create your very own career.

Step 5 - Plan of Attack

Is this the right thing to do???

Step 6 - Evaluating Your Decision

Ask yourself,

Is this decision working out the way I had hoped?.

Come up with changes or new choices as you improve your decision-making skills.
