Running With a Purpose

Rohnert Park, CA- Last Saturday, 200 students, alumni, faculty, community members and even a few pets participated in the Fourth Annual Tour de Campus.  The 5k race, hosted by SSU's School of Business and Economics, raised $3,000 for the charitable organization, Students Rising Above.  Some participants raced in costume or business attire as they ran the three mile course across Sonoma State University's campus.

"We are running with a purpose," said Alyssa Perez, a senior and Accounting Forum President.  A few students in the Accounting Forum are a part of Students Rising Above and that makes this event especially important to the Accounting Forum as a whole.

The organization, Students Rising Above is "a pioneer in recognizing that low-income, first generation, college bound students need more than a tuition check to graduate from college."  Brenda Walker, the North Bay advisor for Students Rising Above, noted that this organization is different because they actually help the students all the way through graduation instead of just getting them to college.

Many racers participated in the Dean's Challenge.  For each person running in a suit who beats him, Dean William Silver makes an additional donation to Students Rising Above.  Robbie Large was the first to cross the finish line-as well as beat the Dean-with a time of 19:01.

"It is great to see so many people out here supporting this great event.  Students, alum, faculty and staff, they could be out doing anything with their Saturday but instead they are here," explained Dean Silver before the race started.
