Fetzer: Health and Safety Coordinator

While hiring someone with H&S experience would be advantageous, this may be a great chance for you to leverage your high degree of service orientation, penchant for details and data, and extroverted personality, to a new field. You bring your ability to champion causes and knack at working with others to meet goals, and we'll teach you our approach to health and safety. 

There is a lot on the Health and Safety horizon and some of the initiatives in which you'll be involved include: field work supporting ergonomic analysis for our vineyard applications; working with departments to  investigate incidents; varied computer tasks including heavy Excel use to manage safety training and tracking; assisting with our CARE Recognition program, ordering and awarding prizes and rewards;  managing the maintenance of Safety training and  tracking; entering, and summarizing safety incident information; working with Worker's Compensation claims information and reporting.

About Fetzer: 

Our multi-site California winery operation includes 1000 acres of farmed vineyards and 3 million cases produced annually. Operations include Mendocino County winery, production and vineyard locations; Paso Robles winery and Jekel vineyard operation in Greenfield, with a combined sales of  approximately $185 Million and combined employment of 305 with an additional approximately 40 seasonally.  

Scope:
Responsible for tactical health and safety compliance activities related to systems management, administrative compliance, and field work. 

Basic Function:
Manage systems databases to ensure consistent, timely and documented compliance with Health & Safety regulations; support Health and Safety Manager in administrative compliance responsibilities; interact with departments to support company-wide Health & Safety goals and initiatives. 

Responsibilities:
Percent of Time: 40% Systems Management

Using Excel, manage safety training records for each department/employee; develop class rosters for certification courses and communicate particulars to involved departments; data entry and report generation for departments and employees and provide this information as needed to departments.

Administer, maintain and support Sitehawk MSDS database system by working with departments and Purchasing to ensure validity of content and placement of required information within organization. Coordinate annual inventory, postings and reports as required.

Percent of Time: 40% Administrative Compliance

Coordinate, track and assist with all aspects of CARE recognition program. Participate in, develop and distribute minutes and occasionally lead the CARE sub-committee meetings. Order and distribute individual awards and safety buck prizes. Produce, distribute and communicate annual program details quarterly winners and year end results in a timely fashion. Support department efforts in meeting monthly and yearly objectives by engaging representatives and offering suggestions on opportunities to increase performance. 

Manage safety training library including video and print inventory and distribution, and provide training support to departments; create and maintain annual safety training calendar; order training equipment and maintain inventory of safety training materials and supplies.  

Obtain, coordinate, and manage certificates of insurance for service providers.

Report, track, and maintain incident reports and reports of unsafe conditions including completion of corrective actions, and provide monthly recaps and reports to departments. 

Percent of Time: 10% Field Work

Manage, track and schedule all pressure vessel inspections and permitting.

Schedule and coordinate annual hearing tests and respiratory medical questionnaires.  

Participate in and conduct incident investigations and site inspections. 

Support Human Resources with departmental required postings related to EH&S compliance.  

Percent of Time: 10% Miscellaneous Compliance

Promote a responsible environmental, health and safety culture through cross-functional cooperation, teams, communications and training.  

Participate and support the Safety & Health Committee and all related sub-committees. Compile and distribute monthly minutes and related materials. Participate in monthly site inspections including tracking and communicating corrective actions.

Support Health & Safety Manager with workers compensation claims management. 

Maintain and order first aid kits and supplies. 

Must Experience: 

  • Broad general understanding of health and safety compliance issues;
  • Also open to recent graduates or candidates looking to transition to H&S field.
  • 2-5 years related experience. (This can be in general office work.)
  • Valid CA Driver's License

Preferred Experience:

  • College degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Biology, or related field preferred, or two to five years related experience and education combination. 
  • Bilingual English/Spanish 

Skills:
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills and the ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions and changing deadlines and instructions;
  • Proficient in Windows based computer programs, such as Word, Excel, and Power Point, and the internet;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with all levels of personnel, as well as external contacts, vendors, and contractors;
  • Independent decision making ability with minimal supervision;
  • Professional business writing and oral communication skills; Excellent mathematic and reasoning skills;
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and high degree of trust and integrity.

Location:
Fetzer Vineyards' corporate office is located at 12901 Old River Rd Hopland, CA 95449  Hopland is a small town of less than 800 people located at the start of the Redwoods of Northern California. It is about a two hour drive, along scenic U.S. Route 101, north of San Francisco. No relocation available for this position.
