Accounting Students Team with Professionals to Impact the Community

sbe_accounting_volunteer.jpgLast Wednesday, 15 students of the Sonoma State Accounting Forum teamed with 5 professionals from Burr Pilger Mayer (BPM), the largest California-based accounting and consulting firm, to serve the local community. As volunteers, they supported the Redwood Empire Food Bank (REFB) in Santa Rosa.

During their two hours of service, the students and professionals repackaged more than 5,000 pounds of pinto beans, which will provide for about 5,000 individuals.

"By choosing to donate their time to the REFB, they ensured that our food recipients receive the food that they need. Our volunteers are the reason we can serve over 78,000 of our neighbors in need every single month. This includes children, working families and senior citizens," explained Jen Oberti, Volunteer Programs Manager at the REFB.

The Redwood Empire Food Bank aims "to end hunger in our community." Last year, the REFB distributed more than 13.8 million pounds of food to various Sonoma County nonprofits. Not only was the service day a positive impact for the community, but the students benefitted from networking with the BPM associates.

Kassi Brownlow, a third year accounting student, said, "Volunteering at the food bank was a great experience. We were able to connect with business professionals while helping out a great cause."

Community service and networking opportunities are foundational in the success of the Accounting Forum. Last October, during the Forum's annual 5k run, they fundraised over $3,500 for the local nonprofit, Summer Search.  Every fall semester, the Forum hosts "Meet the Firms", an event where students network with recruiting accounting professionals in hopes to find an internship or full-time position. Serving at the Redwood Empire Food Bank alongside BPM, combined these two efforts.
