A message from the Dean
Hello and welcome to Sonoma State University's School of Science and Technology (SST) web site. I would like to briefly describe some of the programs and facilities of my school. The school's departments and programs consist of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Kinesiology, Mathematics, Nursing, and Physics and Astronomy. Additionally we have four masters programs in Biology, Computer and Engineering Science, Kinesiology, and Nursing. When you explore these departments you will be exploring programs that are rich in talent and faculty who believe that undergraduate and graduate education should be a highly interactive experience. Currently the School of Science and Technology enrolls about 1,300 majors supported by about 150 faculty and staff. Our brand new Cerent Engineering Science Laboratories include a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope (LSCM), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Auger Spectrometer (for surface analysis), and many sophisticated photonics and electronics instruments. Additionally, we have an X-ray Diffractometer, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Gas Chromatograph, DNA sequencing, and many other instruments in our chemistry and biology laboratories. With more than 200 computers, our laboratories are well equipped for computer programming and mathematics and statistics computation, and computer controlled measurements. Some of our laboratories are sponsored by major high tech industries. I would like to emphasize that all of our sophisticated and high-level instruments are available for the use of our undergraduate students. The SST faculty, staff and I are proud of the degree of care that we offer our students. Our faculty's resolve in involving undergraduate students in their research and scholarly activities is one of the important highlights of SST. I encourage you to visit the web sites of various SST departments to become familiar with the extent of our laboratory facilities and the current exciting faculty and student projects. Nanotechnology, biotechnology and bioinformatics are among some of the new and exciting fields of studies of the SST faculty. Allow me to tell you a little about what I see happening around me on a daily basis. I see undergraduate students who are preparing themselves to make a profound difference in our ever-changing, ever-challenging world. I see students who know that education is not just a means to a vocational end, but a life long journey in which knowledge and discovery will enable them to understand and savor the world around them. I see faculty who consider excellence in education as the highest calling. I see advisors and other staff members who regard students as individuals, not just numbers and codes. These dedicated and caring people help make Sonoma State University an exceptionally positive place for our students. Most of all, I see a place for students who are looking for an adventure in undergraduate and graduate studies. Sonoma State University will allow you to work closely with the faculty-literally some of the brightest stars in their fields-and participate in their ongoing University research. As a Science and Technology student you will benefit from all the educational facilities and laboratories of the SST. At the School of Science and Technology, we believe that challenge, discovery and growth will help our students find a better future in pursuing their graduate studies, or working as educators, engineers, scientists, computer programmers, nurses, environmentalists, mathematicians, statisticians and other professions. I invite you to continue to explore the possibilities that a degree from Sonoma State University's School of Science and Technology will offer. Visit the SSU web site at www.sonoma.edu and visit our campus by arranging a campus tour by calling (707) 664-3029. It may well be the greatest discovery of your life.
