THE SLENDER THREAD
Friday, December 2 at 7:00
The late, great Anne Bancroft stars in Sydney Pollack’s
first film as director. Set in Space Needle-dominated Seattle,
Sidney Poitier is a volunteer at a crisis center when Bancroft
calls in after taking pills. This riveting drama goes backward
and forward in time, following the family drama that led
up to the crisis, as well as the search to find the woman
before it is too late. The film features some eye-popping
60’s camerawork, a jazzy, evocative score by Quincy
Jones, and an unbelievable supporting cast that includes
Telly Savalas, Ed Asner, Stephen Hill and Dabney Coleman.

THE MORE THE MERRIER

“George Stevens' comedies had two particular
distinguishing features: a strong sense of character and
an offbeat handling of romance. Both are sparklingly
displayed in this story about the housing shortage in wartime Washington that
prompts a government worker to share her apartment with two men. Joel McCrea
deftly moves in on Jean Arthur's feelings as well as her furniture, and Charles
Coburn gives an Oscar-winning performance.” -National Film Theatre, London
