Student Health Center Pharmacy Information

Regularly Enrolled SSU students are eligible to use all Student Health Center services, including a state licensed Pharmacylocated in the lobby of the Student Health Center Building.

The SHC Pharmacy is staffed by a registered pharmacist who is available to fill prescriptions written by SSU Student Health Center clinicians only.  In addition, a large variety of discounted over-the-counter (OTC) items are available for purchase by SSU students.

The Pharmacist provides information about prescription and over the counter medications (including instructions, indications, precautions, potential side effects and interactions) and is happy to discuss self care information and answers to health related questions about medications, supplements, and other substances.  Students interested in looking up more information about their medications can find a good on-line reference at http://www.healthtouch.com/level1/p_dri.htm

SSU STUDENT HEALTH CENTER PHARMACY HOURS

  • Mondays:                        9:00 AM - 5:30 PM (Only when academic year classes are in session)

  • Closed 12 to 1 pm
  • Summer                        Call ahead for hours during the summer

Most medical visits to the SHC are without additional charge. Discounted charges are made for pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and some specialized lab tests.

Prices at the SSU Pharmacy are kept significantly lower than at community pharmacies in order to facilitate affordable access to medications for our SSU student patients.  These savings are achieved as follows:

Payment can be made only by cash or check and is due at the time of service.  Credit card or ATM payments are not accepted at the Student Health Center because the SHC would have to pass credit card transaction fees on to the student which would add several dollars to the cost of each purchase.  ATM machines are located nearby (in the Student Union and in the Residence Halls area).

Formulary:  The Student Health Center Pharmacy maintains a formulary designed to meet the medication needs of most students cared for at the SHC.  In order to keep prices low, the SHC Pharmacy stocks a more limited array of medications that would be available at a community pharmacy. This allows the Student Health Center to achieve cost savings by buying in bulk and minimizing the cost of wastage from the outdating of little used medications.  We then pass these savings on to the student.  In the atypical instance that the SHC Pharmacy does not stock the medication prescribed, a SHC prescription can be taken to can be filled by any off campus pharmacy, at the student’s own expense.

The SHC is not able to bill third party insurance carriers for students, but since many of our prescription medications are in the $5 to $12 range, our prescription prices often turn out to be lower than a student’s health insurance pharmaceutical co-payments would be.
A receipt is provided with each purchase, and students with private insurance can contact their insurance company to see if their company will reimburse for the cost of medications or vaccines purchased at the Student Health Center, if the medication or vaccine cost turns out to be greater than the student’s insurance co-pay.
