Academic Interests

Dr. Krause fell in love with sociology as an undergraduate sociology major at UC Berkeley, where he was influenced by Herbert Blumer, the framer of symbolic interactionism. After five years of teaching and studying in south Louisiana, Dr. Krause returned to his native California to join the faculty of Humboldt State University, where he taught undergraduate and graduate students and conducted research, often with teams of students, for 34 years until his retirement. He co-founded the Center for Applied Social Analysis and Education (CASAE) at HSU and served as its Director from 1991 until 2005. He was instrumental in developing the Sociological Practice M.A. program at HSU, the first master’s level program to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Programs in Applied and Clinical Sociology (CAPACS), a body created by the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology (AACS). Currently, Dr. Krause is working with AACS colleagues and others to develop a symbolic interactionist framework for linking sociological theory and research to sociological practice that he calls translational sociology. He received the Alex Boros award for contributions to AACS in 2011. He is currently (2011-2013) CAPACS Nominations Chair.
