Sociology Home

Sociology is the discipline that studies groups and societies—what they are, how they got that way, and what impact they have. It is a field with many areas of study; these areas range from the behavior of the individual as a social actor to the structure of entire societies. Studying sociology involves attention to theory, research, and diverse components of society. The application of sociological insights improves the human condition within the context of a strong tradition of social justice and human equality.

The Department of Sociology offers a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in Sociology. The major consists of a set of core courses including sociological theory, research methods, statistics, and a senior capstone course, as well as diverse electives. After completing a degree in sociology, students enter careers in a variety of fields including the non-profit sector, social services, teaching, human resources, local government, and counseling. Many students pursue graduate degrees at the master’s and doctoral levels.
