Sociology 300.3 Course Description

Sociology 300.3: Sociological Analysis

Instructor: Elaine Wellin

Class Hours: T Th 8:00- 9:50 am

Location: Stevenson 2091

Sociological analysis, or research methods, often serves to bind researchers in the many and diverse fields of sociology. This course covers both quantitative and qualitative approaches to research; based on course readings, lectures, and writing assignments, each student will complete an original research project by term's end. The course begins by fostering an understanding of the dimensions of sociological research; its relation to social theory, including methodological theory; and ways to search and review research literatures. We learn how to design both quantitative and qualitative research studies, including techniques of measurement and sampling issues. For quantitative projects, data collection techniques and analyses are covered for experimental research, survey research, and nonreactive or secondary analysis. For qualitative work, techniques and issues for data collection and analyses are covered for field research; a briefer review is offered for historical-comparative research. In addition, the course stresses research ethics, report writing, and the socio-political aspects of research and funding. Attendance is required. Chapter examinations, homework assignments, and research report writing assignments are required throughout the course, all designed to help prepare student researchers to successfully complete their own research projects.
