Sociology DepartmentSociology 305 Course DescriptionSociology 312: Sociology of Gender Instructor: Elaine Wellin Class Hours: MW 2:00-3:40 pm Location: Stevenson 2001 The sociology of gender helps students to develop a more accurate picture of the dynamic gender system in American and other societies. It provides a framework with which to understand the influences of gender in the lives of individuals and groups. Explanations of gender and gender differences will emphasize socialization, the socially-constructed nature of gender in cross-cultural analyses and other feminist theories. The study of gender has led to a reduction of influences of gender in some women's and men's lives; however, this reduction tends to vary sharply along class and ethnic lines. Thus, the mediating influences of ethnicity and class, as well as socio-economic issues of gender in the workplace, including the global workplace, will inform our discussions. Emphases are placed on family, popular culture, violence against women, and visions and social movements toward change in contemporary gender relations. Classes include lectures, larger and small group discussions, class exercises, and video/film presentations. Attendance is required. Take-home midterm and final examinations, a discussion requirement, and a class project are required.
