C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination
2011 C. Wright Mills Award
The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce that Katherine Saunders is the recipient of the C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination for 2011. The Mills Award is bestowed on the best student paper of the 2010-2011academic year and was given to Katherine for her paper titled "Declination of the Traditional Third Place Culture in Coffee Houses," which she wrote for Sociology 498 (Senior Seminar). In addition, Nicole Bettencourt, was awarded an Honorable Mention for her paper "In a Relationship with Facebook," which was also written for Sociology 498. Congratulations, Katherine and Nicole!
2010 C. Wright Mills Award
The winner of the 2009-2010 C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination was sociology major, Michelle Tucker. Her winning paper was entitled "Past and Present: Shared Perceptions of Time in Advertisements." Michelle wrote her paper in Professor Noel Byrne’s Senior Seminar course which focuses on empirical and conceptual work on the sociology of time. The committee was impressed by the rigor of Michelle’s empirical analysis, the creativity of her study, and her clear writing style. In addition, the C. Wrights Mills Award Committee was impressed by two other submissions. Luis Bravo’s paper entitled, "California AB 540 Students: Undocumented Students' Journey through College," and Erica Stephens Owen’s paper entitled "Gender as Applied in Social Class and Emotional Labor: A Dining Experience," both received honorable mentions.
2009 C. Wright Mills Award
The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce that Erin Garnett has received the 2009 C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination. The Mills Award is bestowed annually on the best student paper from the previous academic year (2008-09). Erin’s winning paper (“Transgressive Gender Socialization ‘Comes Out’ in Lesbian- and Gay-Themed Children’s Books”) was written for Sociology 498 (Senior Seminar, Fall 2008). Congratulations, Erin!

The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce that Andrea Lochtefeld has received the 2008 C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination. The Mills Award is bestowed annually on the best student paper from the previous academic year (2007-08). Andrea’s winning paper (“Collective Action and Negotiation of Space at Indie-Hip-Hop and Indie-Rock Concerts”) was written for Sociology 414 (Methods Seminar: Social Interaction, Fall 2007). Congratulations, Andrea!
2007 C. Wright Mills Award
The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce that Laura Chandler and Lianna Hart have received the 2007 C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination. The Mills Award is bestowed upon the best student paper from the previous academic year (2006-07). The Department decided to honor two students this year. Laura Chandler received the award for her paper “Cohousing: Community Formation and Enactment,” which she wrote for Sociology 498 (Senior Seminar, Spring 2007). Lianna Hart earned the award for her paper “Enacting Ideologies: Autism and the Maternal Role,” which she wrote for Sociology 495 (Special Study, Fall 2006, Spring 2007). The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce that Melanie Snook is the recipient of the C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination for 2006. The Mills Award is bestowed on the best student paper from the previous academic year (2005-06) and was given to Melanie for her paper titled "Building Family Daycare," which she wrote for Sociology 498 (Senior Seminar). Melanie graduated from SSU with a degree in Sociology in Spring 2006. In addition, Andrea C. Cox was awarded an Honorable Mention for her paper “Perceptions of Home: Social Construction, Identity, Place Attachment, and Gender,” which was also written for Sociology 498. Congratulations, Melanie and Andrea!
2005 C. Wright Mills Award
The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce that Kristine Snyder is the recipient of the department's C. Wright Mills Award for Sociological Imagination for 2005. The Mills Award is bestowed on the best student paper from the previous academic year (2004-05) and was given to Kristine for her paper titled "The Social Development of the Adopted Self," which she wrote under the guidance of Professor Kathy Charmaz. Kristine graduated from SSU with a degree in Sociology in Spring 2005 and is now applying to graduate school.
