SSU ranked 6th in west for top Master's programs

Sonoma State has a lot of appealing characteristics: its small campus size, beautiful location, and the Sonoma Aroma. On top of all that, Sonoma has recently been ranked as one of the top public schools in the West offering Master’s degrees.

According to the U.S. News & World Report’s annual “America’s Best Colleges” guide, Sonoma State has been ranked sixth in the Western Region category of Top Public Universities with a Master’s program. In this year’s annual survey, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was at the top of the list in this category.

Of the approximately 8,000 students attending Sonoma State, about 1600 are graduate students working their way towards a Master’s degree in one of Sonoma’s 14 graduate degree programs. The programs range from Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Public Administration and Master of Science, with concentrations in most.

In addition, the Sonoma State offers a joint degree in mathematics with San Francisco State University as well as a joint doctorate in educational administration with CSU Sacramento and the UC Davis, which is brand new this semester.

“The focus at Sonoma State over the last several years has really been increasing our undergraduate student population, the freshmen and transfer students. But at the same time, we really do offer some very fine Master’s programs,” says Elaine Sundberg, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Graduate Studies.

Sundberg has worked at Sonoma State for nineteen years, the last five of which have been spent at her current position. “I think people focus very much on the undergraduate mission of this University… but part of Sonoma State’s mission is also to provide quality professional and graduate programs that serve this region. And that’s exactly what our Master’s programs do.”
