Dodgeball being thrown at intramurals
Chandra Farnham , Staff Writer

“If you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball,” quote used from Ben Stiller’s movie Dodgeball.

Intramural dodgeball is fairly new here at the SSU’s Recreation Center. Last semester was the first intramural dodgeball league.

To be a part of the intramural Dodgeball league included a payment of $50 per team and a minimum of ten players. If you had a coed team you needed a minimum of two girls on the court at all times, unless they get hit out.

There are only a few ways to avoid getting hit out: to dodge the ball being thrown at you, to catch the ball that is being thrown at you, to block the ball being thrown at you with a ball that you have or an extreme way is to be hit in the head.

“I’ve been ‘domed’ in the head quite a few times, the good thing about getting hit in the head is surprisingly you get to stay in the game,” said Senior Cory Evans.

Last semester Evans was on the School Girl’s Team, the first ever Intramural Dodgeball Championship Team, and this year she is on team DT’s, an undefeated team of 4 and 0, which stands for Danny’s Team. Danny’s Team is undefeated and will be participating in the playoffs to find out who’s team can throw the balls the fastest and hardest to become this semester’s Dodgeball Championship Team.

Although, a coed team needs to have a minimum of ten players on the court and two of them girls, team DT never had more than seven or eight players on the court at all times. So the fact that they are undefeated and never had a full court says a lot about their sweet dodgeball skills.

Danny Burris is the Captain of DT and the Intramural Coordinator for the Recreation Center. The Rec Center is where Burris and senior Angela Saunders work together talked about being on the same dodgeball team.

“I’ve always watched people play dodgeball and they looked like they were always having fun. So when Danny asked me to be on his team I could not find a reason not to. Yet now that I am playing dodgeball, I’m finding out that people are crazy intense. Playing dodgeball is different than watching it. It should be called ‘extreme dodgeball’ instead of just Dodgeball,” said Saunders.

Intramural sports are not something new to Saunders. She played Intramural Basketball and indoor soccer freshman year. So this semester she decided to try something new by playing dodgeball and softball.

If you missed out on watching any of the previous dodgeball games, you can still catch the rest of the dodgeball playoff games on Sunday’s at 4:15 p.m. in the Recreation Center. If you’ve ever wanted to play dodgeball in an intramural league, you will have another chance next semester. It’s never too late to start thinking and talking to nine of your closest friends.
