Advising and Career Peers

This position includes one to one drop-in sessions to answer basic academic advising questions, assist students with major exploration and job search. The Advising Peers review students' resumes, cover letters and assist with interview preparation. The peers conduct over 50 presentations a semester in academic and residential settings; including Interview Preparation, Choosing a major, General Education pattern, Registration Review and Resume Writing. Due to the in-depth knowledge required for this position, the Career and Advising Center is seeking Peer Advisors that have at least one year of Student Leadership experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct drop-in sessions to answer basic academic advising questions, major/career exploration and job search; make referrals as needed.
  • Provide General Education advising for all students.
  • Review students' resumes, cover letters and assist with interview preparation.
  • Provide outreach and promote Peer Advising Program, Career Advising and Academic Advising to the campus as a whole.
  • Presentations in academic and residential settings including Interview Preparation, Career Development topics, General Education pattern, Registration and Resume Writing
  • Assist students with on-line tools including SSU student on-line service, Seawolf Jobs, Advising and Career web sites and university resources
  • Support Advising and Career events.
  • Conduct tours of the office resources and present to freshman classes, clubs and organizations throughout campus.
  • Respect the confidential nature of student records and communications.
  • Provide administrative support as necessary.
  • Participate in on-going training, once a week
  • Develop programming to educate campus on advising and career development.

Qualifications: Advising Peer should be patient, friendly, takes initiative and possess strong communication and leadership skills. A candidate must have a GPA of 2.75 or above, a basic knowledge and interest in programs and services. Evidence of campus leadership, knowledge of campus policies and services. Candidates from all majors and schools are encouraged to apply. Minimum-one year commitment required for this position (for example, Fall 2012 and Spring 2013). Completion of Univ. 238 strongly encouraged. Sophomore or Junior standing. Approx. 8 hours/week. Starting pay $9.00/hour
