Program Dates: Training - Spring Pre-Service on May 8, 3-6pm and 6 days at the end of Spring 2015 semester (Dates are TBA). (Peer Leaders must attend all trainings) Summer Bridge - June 27th - July 3rd

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Summer Bridge Peer Leaders provide support and guidance to students participating in SSU's Summer Bridge Program. This week long program provides students the opportunity to develop and experience the formation of a collaborative learning/social community while developing skills to help their transition from high school to college. It also includes academic advising and course registration for Fall semester. Program participants are first-generation and historically low-income students preparing to attend SSU in the Fall. Work schedule will include night and weekend work during the program. On-campus living is required throughout the training and the program.

JOB RESPONSIBILITITES:

1. Supervision of Student Residential Experience

Participate in the check-in and checkout procedures for Summer Bridge students. Provide guidance and supervision during their participation in the program. Enforce policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of participants. Provide conflict resolution when necessary.

2. Facilitating the Development of Community Among Students

In small group settings, facilitate activities designed to create a supportive environment that assists students in transitioning to a new social and academic setting. Encourage students to consider personal, academic and career aspirations.

3. Introducing Students to Campus Resources

Assist staff with activities designed to familiarize students with the academic, social and personal support efforts available at the university. Provide assistance with academic advising and help with course registration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Required

Mature, self-motivated, quick learner, able to work in a team environment and at times, with minimum supervision. Must have experience working with students of diverse ethnic and/or low-income backgrounds. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills needed. Must possess knowledge of campus programs and services. Must have mobility to work in a multiple story complex without an elevator. Minimum overall GPA of 2.0, with at least 24 units completed at SSU. Satisfactory completion of UNIV 238 (Foundations of Leadership) or the equivalent, achieving a grade of B or better, or comparable leadership experience. Must also be available to attend Spring Pre-Service on May 8, 2015, 3-6pm.

Must be able to stay one week after the end of Spring Semester for Summer Bridge Training.

2. Preferred

Bilingual in English/Spanish. Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

These positions are: ALL Peer Mentor positions, FIG Peer Advisor, Humanities, Interactive Theater Project, Mosaic Peer Advisor, Summer Bridge Leader, and Summer Orientation Leader

3. Sign up for the Leadership Class, UNIV 238.
a. To receive priority access to UNIV 238 at the beginning of registration week beginning November 14th, you will need to complete the online application form and submit your essay. If these two requirements are completed by noon on Thursday, November 13th you will be guaranteed a priority seat in UNIV 238. If these two requirements are completed after noon on Thursday, November 13th, you will still be guaranteed a seat in UNIV 238, but you might have fewer choices in which section you will be able to take.

4. Submit all pieces of the online application no later than 4:30 pm on January 30, 2015. (This includes the letter of recommendation)

5. Sign up February 2nd-6th, 2015 on-line for individual interviews.

6. Sign up for Group Process.
