Sustainability Initiatives and Objectives

Strategic Goal:

Coordinate information about and establish targets for the development of sustainability and social responsibility in academics, culture, infrastructure, and development at SSU.

Objectives:

  1. Establish sustainability as a core element of SSU’s identity.
    • Initiative: Coordinate and disseminate information on sustainability programs and activities.
    • Initiative: Develop a web database of SSU and Community Programs focused on sustainability
    • Initiative: Develop a public information campaign to feature sustainability-oriented academic programs and administrative initiatives.
  2. Develop new initiatives related to sustainability.
    • Initiative: Incorporate sustainability into our core curriculum as a major theme in the General Education Program.
    • Initiative: Development a 9 unit upper-division GE block on the theme of Sustainability related to the mission, context, and culture of SSU.
    • Initiative: Coordinate physical and infrastructure planning for sustainability with appropriate curriculum and co-curriculum.
    • Initiative: Coordinate the curriculum, including service-learning projects, with Associated Students, Student Union, and community-based sustainability projects.
  3. Seek extramural support for sustainability programs and activities.
    • Initiative: Support sustainability-oriented activities in schools, departments and programs in obtaining grant and philanthropic support to expand their activities.
    • Initiative: Benchmark best practices at other universities and higher education organizations such as other CSU campuses, other universities outside the CSU system and other organizations.
    • Initiative: Join the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education
  4. Support sustainable economic development in the North Bay region.
    • Initiative: SSU faculty and staff will take leadership roles in planning for and promoting resource efficient regional economic development consistent with the Ahwahnee principles.
    • Initiative: SSU faculty and staff will take leadership roles in planning for and promoting social sustainability.
