Slow Foods
Our Mission
Slow Food USA envisions a future food system that is based on the principles of high quality and taste, environmental sustainability, and social justice – in essence, a food system that is good, clean and fair. We seek to catalyze a broad cultural shift away from the destructive effects of an industrial food system and fast life; toward the regenerative cultural, social and economic benefits of a sustainable food system, regional food traditions, the pleasures of the table, and a slower and more harmonious rhythm of life.
Who are we?
We are a student driven Slow Food Convivium at Sonoma State University; Working in defense of quality, locally produced food on our campus and in our community. A convivium is a local chapter, of the international Slow Food movement. A student convivium is a tool for implementing the Slow Food mission on a local level and therefore the grassroots expression of the movement.
What are we doing?
We are currently working on the development of our infrastructure both as a chapter of the international movement of Slow Food and as a Chartered SSU Campus Club. We are proud to be working towards becoming the 8th campus chapter in the U.S. and the first in California. We are guided and sponsored by the Sonoma County Convivium (special accolades to their President, Bill Hawn) whose support and encouragement is proving to be invaluable to our process. This blog is intended to serve as a posting board for relevant convivium and community events in addition to ramblings about our experiences with and about food.

Project Compost!
Initiated by ASI Environmental Affairs Director, Andrew Sloan, Project Compost! is an effort to implement a compost system into the University Center, which will be built 2009/10. In collaboration with Dining Services, Landscaping Services, ENSP department, as well as community agencies such as North Bay Corporation and C2 Alternative Services, the system proposed is to install two Earth Tubs on the back loading dock of the University Center. Dining Venues will deposit food waste into the Earth Tubs, Landscaping will unload processed compost and bring to a location to cure, then using the finished product in campus landscaping operations.
