Composed while Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was imprisoned by the Nazis in Stalag VIII A, Quartet for the End of Time premiered in January 1941 under the most trying of circumstances: freezing temperatures, inferior instruments, and the wretched conditions of life in a POW camp. Join Trio Ariadne, the 2013-14 Weill Hall Artists-in-Residence, and guest violinist Joe Edelberg as they discuss and perform this remarkable work.
