Sonoma State University Dance Program is committed to offering contemporary approaches to dance with special attention to the integration of mind, body and spirit.

You do not need to audition to be accepted into the dance program as a freshman. As a transfer sophomore or junior, you will need to take a placement class. If you want to apply for a scholarship, you need to apply in February and audition in March for the coming year. Scholarships are granted only to those students who have been admitted to the University and are declared Theatre Majors.

We aim to:

  • Develop and expand the technical skills and artistry of a dancer
  •  Nurture performance skills with a wide range of aesthetic approaches and processes
  •  Cultivate dance as an art form founded in the intelligence and joy of human movement
  •  Inspire and develop dance artists as creators as well as interpreters of meaningful work for these times

We offer:

  • A  BA in Theatre with a concentration in Dance, with innovative curriculum, including contemporary dance, ballet, jazz, contact improvisation, and hip hop dance styles

  •  Class sizes that allow for personal attention and individual feedback
  •  A community of dancers that support one another
  •  Performing Arts/Dance scholarships available through Endowed Funds
  •  The Dance Program regularly hosts guest artists and companies twho stage repertoire or create original work with SSU dance students supported by the Evert B. Person Endowment Fund. Recent guest artists have included Mark Haim, Claire Porter, Annie Rosenthal Parr, Joe Goode and Axis Dance Company. For the spring semester 2013, we are delighted to bring the Dance Exchange, Liz Lerman and the Ailey Legacy Residency.
