EDUCATION

Timothy G. Bromage, Ph.D., (B.A., 1977) is assistant professor of Anthropology at Hunter College in New York. He also teachers in the Thomas Hunter Honors Program, Hunter College and PhD Programs in each of Anthropology, Biology, and Earth and Environmental Sciences. He received the NASA achievement award in 1991 and the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1992.
Davis W. Campbell, (B.A., 1966) is executive director of the California School Boards Association. After graduating from Sonoma State University, Campbell went on to earn his M.A. from UC Davis in 1968. From 1972 to 1983, he served in the State Department of Education. He was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989.
Lorna Catford, (M.A., 1975) is an author, SSU lecturer and coordinator of internships in Psychology. She is the former lecturer on Personal Creativity in Business at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002.
Richard DeFreeze, (B.S., 1980) is Principal Scientist and Photonics Research & Development Manager at Hach Homeland Security Technologies. Dr. DeFreez is an author of nearly 100 peer-reviewed scientific and technical papers and book chapters. He is the principal architect of three bio-aerosol threat detection triggers: BARTS, Bioni, and BioLert. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award 1995.
Pamela Devlin, (B.A., 1978) is the founding principal of Maria Carillo High School, Santa Rosa, CA. Devlin began teaching in 1980 and in the following ten years taught every grade and ability level from seventh grade Language Experience to twelfth grade Advanced Placement English. She received the Sonoma County Teacher of the Year Award in 1991 and was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996.
Christopher Exline, Ph.D., (B.A., 1970) is a professor and chairman of the Department of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno, and of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Land Use Planning Policy. Exline is also faculty of the Graduate School. He was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991.
Celestino Fernandez, Ph.D., (B.A., 1973) is Professor of Sociology at the University of Arizona, where he also served in several administrative positions. Fernandez teaches courses and conducts research on several areas pertaining to culture and diversity. He has published around forty articles and book chapters relating to education and Mexican immigration. As well as receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991, Fernandez was honored by the American Association for Higher Education for his "Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education."
Douglas Gaffin (Teaching Credential, 1982) is dean of the School of University College at the University of Oklahoma. As an introductory zoology course instructor to over 1,700 students per year at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Gaffin’s course was consistently rated as one of the most challenging and enjoyable on campus. His teaching experience began at his alma mater Oregon State University, where he earned a Ph.D. in Zoology and Neurophysiology in 1994. As an instructor in a large-enrollment anatomy and physiology course, Dr. Gaffin was one of the first instructors to use computer technology in the classroom.

He co-authored a biology textbook entitled “Life.” A related project called Active Art sprang from the textbook. Active Art allows instructors to decompose a textbook’s art to its core elements, making it easier to use PowerPoint to tell a complex story. McGraw-Hill now ties Active Art to each of its major science textbooks. In 1999, Dr. Gaffin won the Outstanding First-Year-Advocate Award, a national award administered by the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. Dr. Gaffin was chosen as Distinguished Alumnus, 2004.
Amy Glasmeier, (B.A., 1978) is professor of Geography and Regional Planning at Penn State University and Fellow, Economic Policy Institute, Washington, D.C. She was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999.
Bernie Goldstein, Ph.D., is an outstanding biology teacher and academic leader, past SSU Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2003.
Mary Lyons, Ph.D., (B.A., 1971) is the first woman president of any of the nation’s five Maritime Academies (California Maritime Academy) and was awarded the rank and title of Rear Admiral. She is currently serving as President of University of San Diego and was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1992.
Sandra D. Michael, Ph.D., (B.A., 1967) is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the State University of New York Binghamton. She is also the National Institutes of Health post-doctoral fellow for the Department of Animal Sciences. She has over 100 published papers and presentations as a mid-career scientist. Dr. Michael has been a "research mentor" for many high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, especially females. She was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991.
Charles Peck, Ph.D., (M.A., 1976) is project director of the Washington State University personnel preparation grant from the U.S. Department of Education. He is also co-principal investigator for the Rural Area Model Preschool Project funded by the Department of Education. He was an Distinguished Alumni in 1990.
Lisa A. Petrides, Ph.D., (M.B.A., 1991) is Assistant Professor of Education and Director of joint EDD/MBA program in educational leadership and management at Teachers College at Columbia University. She authored Case Studies on Information Technology in Higher Education: Implications for Policy and Practice. She was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000.
Susan C. Powell, (C.L.H., 1972; C.S.H., 1972) is founder and past Executive Director of Sonoma County Agency for Infant Development. She received Sonoma County YWCA “Woman of Distinction” award in 1981 and the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989.
Kathleen Puntillo, (B.S., 1976) is a professor in Physiological Nursing Department and director of the Critical Care/Trauma graduate program at UC San Francisco. She was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1994.
Robert Ramirez, (B.S., 1971) is a mathematics and physics teacher at Windsor High School. He began teaching at Healdsburg High School since 1973, which was his alma mater. Ramirez has been an inspiration to countless students to pursue careers in science, math and engineering. He received numerous awards including the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002.
Margaret Rees, (B.S., 1972) is a Professor of Geology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Her research continued to focus on rocks in the western United States in order to understand earth history in the region during the Cambrian time period (545-505 million years ago). She was the first woman to lead a research expedition to Antarctica and was principal investigator on three other Antarctic expeditions. Rees, along with Maralee Mayberry from UNLV, initiated a National Science Foundation funded project to integrate feminist theory. She was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997.
Richard A. Satterlie, Ph.D., (B.A., 1973) is a Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Marine Science at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation 2002-03. Research area: Neural control of locomotion in marine invertebrates. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1992.
Mary Smithberger, (M.A., 1995) is a consultant in Child Development Division of California Department of Education and is responsible for Infant Capacity Building Plan. She oversees Program for Infant/Toddler Caregivers (PITC) and was granted the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001.

Phyllis Y. Turner, (B.A.) is a California Literature Project teacher leader. She has taught various grade levels at Monroe Elementary School in Santa Rosa City Elementary School District. Turner stresses not only academics, but also development of self-esteem and personal growth. She is an outstanding leader in her field and an exceptional role model for her students. Turner received the California Educator Award in 1990 and the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1991.
