Student Academic Probation, Disqualification and Progress
Policy #2007-4
It is the policy of Sonoma State University that:
- A student will be subject to academic probation if his/her cumulative grade point average in all university work attempted, OR in all work attempted at Sonoma State University, falls below the minimum GPA (2.0).
- Students on academic probation must seek academic advising and/or attend a probation workshop; otherwise an advising hold may be placed on the student’s record.
- A student will be subject to academic disqualification if, after the student has been on probation for at least one semester, his/her cumulative grade point average in all university work attempted, OR in all work at Sonoma State University, falls below the GPA indicated below:
| Class Level | Units Completed | SSU or Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|---|
| Freshmen | (0-29 units completed) | 1.50 |
| Sophomores | (30-59 units completed) | 1.70 |
| Juniors | (60-89 units completed) | 1.85 |
| Seniors | (90 or more units completed) | 1.95 |
| Students pursuing a Post-Baccalaureate, Credential, or Second Bachelor’s Degree |
3.0 |
- A student may be placed on administrative academic probation for withdrawal from a substantial portion of a program in two successive semesters, for repeated failure to progress toward a degree, or for failure to comply with an academic requirement or regulation that is routine for all students or for a defined group of students.
- A student may be placed in administrative academic disqualified status for continued failure to remedy the condition resulting in administrative academic probation. In addition, the president may designate a campus official to act for him or her in the disqualification of students not on probation when: a) a student has, at the end of any semester, fewer cumulative grade points than cumulative units attempted; and b) the cumulative grade point deficiency is so great that, in view of the student’s overall educational program, it seems unlikely that the deficiency will be corrected within a reasonable period of time.
- Students who have been disqualified may not apply for immediate reinstatement. Students who have been disqualified and who have been separated from the University for at least one semester may apply to the University Standards Committee for reinstatement. The Committee shall take into consideration qualitative and quantitative evidence of the student’s ability to overcome his/her grade point deficit (SSU or cumulative); lower-division students are expected to complete enough transferable college-level course work elsewhere to raise their cumulative average to at least 2.0 before applying for reinstatement.
- Disqualified students who have been away from the campus for at least one semester and who believe they have demonstrated that they can be successful at Sonoma State University may apply for reinstatement by petitioning to the University Standards Committee. See http://www.sonoma.edu/ar/records/academic_disqualification.shtml concerning the process of petitioning for reinstatement.
- Disqualified students who are reinstated will be on a probationary basis until all grade point deficiencies have been removed or until they are again disqualified.
- Students who have been reinstated after disqualification and then disqualified again may not be considered for reinstatement except under exceptional circumstances.
