Faculty Representation on Administrative Appointment Committees

Appropriate consultation with the faculty shall occur prior to the appointment by the President of all academic administrators and other administrators of the University.

  1. Establishment of Search Committees for Academic and other Administrative vacancies.
    1. 1.1 The President of the University shall declare when a vacancy exists in an academic or other administrative position and shall notify the Chair of the Faculty.
    2. 1.2 The Chair of the Faculty shall notify Structure and Functions Committee to proceed with election or appointment of faculty representatives to the search committee to fill the administrative vacancy.
  2. Composition of Search Committees for Administrative Appointments.
    1. 2.1 Membership of search committees shall consist of two members appointed by the President, one member selected by the Executive Board of the Associated Students and four members (faculty or members of the affected unit) elected by the faculty or members of the affected unit or appointed by the Senate Executive Committee in the manner specified in Section 4.
  3. Election and Appointment of Faculty to Search Committees.
    1. 3.1 The Structure & Functions Committee shall prepare a list of nominees for elected faculty positions. Nominations shall be sought from the faculty as a whole and/or the units or areas as specified. Additional nominations may be made on the floor of the Senate. The ballot shall then be published and distributed by the Chair of Structure & Functions. Election shall be by majority vote.
    2. 3.2 The Senate Executive Committee shall recommend faculty appointments to those search committees not designated as having elected faculty representation.
    3. 3.3 Faculty elected or appointed to search committees shall be voting members of these committees.
    4. 3.4 The search committee shall consult with the appropriate administrator, the Personnel Office and the Affirmative Action Office and follow the University's search procedures and practices, and shall participate in preparation of the position announcement.
  4. Faculty Representation on Administrative Appointment (Search) Committees.
    1. 4.1 Search Committees for University-wide Administrator IV Positions.
    2. Four faculty members, elected at-large, three of whom must be instructional faculty.
      1. Dean of Academic Programs
      2. Dean of Faculty Affairs
      3. Vice President
    3. 4.2 Search Committees for Other Administrator IV Positions
    4. Two faculty members elected at-Iarge and two members selected by and from the affected unit.
      1. Business Manager
      2. Dean of Administrative Services
      3. Dean of Admissions and Records
      4. Dean of Student Affairs
      5. Director of the Library
    5. 4.3 Search Committees for Dean of School Positions (Administrator IV)
    6. Three faculty shall be elected by and from the faculty within the School according to School procedures. In addition, one Department Chair shall be elected by and from the Department Chairs within the School in a manner determined by the School.
    7. 4.4 Search Committees for Other Administrator IV and III Positions
    8. Two faculty members shall be appointed by the Senate Executive Committee with certain provisions as noted below. Positions in this category include but are not limited to:
      1. Associate Dean of Counseling
      2. Associate Dean of Student Development
      3. Associate Dean of Student Life
      4. Dean of Extended Education and Summer Session
      5. Director of Academic Advising
      6. Director of Athletics
      7. Director of Computing, Media and Telecommunications Services (one CIS faculty)
      8. Director of Development
      9. Director of Educational Support Programs
      10. Director of Housing
      11. Director of Personnel
      12. Director of Plant Operations
      13. Director of Public Safety
      14. Director of Student Health Center (one Nursing faculty)
    9. In addition, the search committee for these positions normally includes two members appropriate to the affected unit, appointed by the President.
    10. 4.5 Search Committee for Other Administrative Positions
    11. The President of the University shall notify the Chair of the Academic Senate of impending recruitment to fill other administrative positions. The notification shall include a request for faculty to serve on the committee, or the names of faculty the President has appointed to the committee.
    12. The Chair of the Senate shall announce to the Senate any request for faculty appointment. This request shall appear in the Senate minutes. There shall be one week after publication of the Senate minutes for additional recommendations for the faculty appointment.
  5. Tenure and Faculty Appointment for Academic Administrators
    1. 5.1 Tenured faculty who assume academic administrative assignments shall continue to hold their rank and shall retain rights to their faculty appointment.
    2. 5.2 A faculty appointment may be granted to new academic administrative appointees only after consultation with the appropriate department.
    3. 5.3 The President may award faculty tenure to a person whose assignment is in an administrative position at the time of appointment. Appointments with tenure shall be made only after an evaluation and recommendation by the appropriate department.
