Unit 1 Addendum

Database design:

The following are useful sites to browse to become more familiar with some of the issues and needs to consider when designing databases for bioinformatics use. Make note of the major points of focus in design.

TDWG Subgroup on Accession Data- Standards, Information Models, and Data Dictionaries for Biological Collections: This site provides a reference list and links to sites dealing with specific aspects of databases, design, and management.

http://www.bgbm.fu-berlin.de/TDWG/acc/Referenc.htm

OPTIMA: This site gives recommendations for designing and contributing to a botanical database focused on the Mediterranean area.

http://www.bgbm.fu-berlin.de/OPTIMA/ITN/recommendations.htm

Prometheus: A Novel Database System for Classifying Biodiversity. This paper describes database design, and provides links to citations.

http://www.dcs.napier.ac.uk/~prometheus/prometheus_1/taxa.htm

The following two sites provide some insight to two projects involving design of microarray databases. The NHGRI site provides a nice flow diagram. The University of Texas site illustrates the breakdown of tables and their content.

NHGRI:

Cancer Genomics Program, U. of Texas: [When checking links, this site was down. Try it in case it is back.]
