2. Looking ahead to weeks 4-6: working in groups

a. Finding case examples
b. Identifying issues & possible dilemmas
c. Brief class presentation followed by discussion

3. Introduction to ethical theories

a. Origins
b. Values, principles of action, & virtues
c. Basic goods & secondary goods
c. Professional codes & codes of ethics

4. Comparison of ethical theories using the quick exercises

a. Ethical intuitionism
b. Virtue ethics
c. Utilitarianism
d. Deontology


For next week:

1. Read in Genetic Engineering: Ch.2; read professional codes in handout.

2. Explore on-line & in literature for case ideas to use 2/19: DNA, central dogma, & evolution. Look for something that focuses on an aspect or process covered in ch. 4. Be prepared to bring these ideas to class 2/12 to organize for the following week. [Heads up: This process will be repeated over the next two weeks for chapters 5 & 6.]
