(Finally, another message....!)
Please turn in your scantrons on Monday, May 17, in the classroom, Darwin 139 -- not in my office or mailbox -- between 8 and 9:50 a.m., which is the scheduled time for our Biol. 218 Final Exam.
Please Note: NO late exams
will be accepted.
Since we just had the Midterm Exam today, I want to postpone the last quiz (#6, which was scheduled for next Monday, May 3) until the following week. More details in class....
I'll bring sign-up sheets for your presentations to class on Wed. Be ready to declare your date, and it's important that only 10 or 11 people sign up for each date, so please have some flexibility

The upcoming Midterm Exam on Monday, Apr. 26 will cover the following chapters (pages as outlined on the class schedule): 10, 12, 13, and 27.
Information about Chapter 14
(microflora handouts) is your extra credit assignment. I'll continue
Chapter 14 next Wed.
Please
note: the extra
credit assignment will only be accepted in class on Monday morning!
I'll have sign-up sheets for
the Presentations (May 3, 5, 10 and 12) in class next
week.
If you have the 8th Edition of your textbook: For Chapter 27, the correct pages to read are pages 771 - 774. I had the ones for the 7th Ed. on the schedule.
(a) There will be a field trip opportunity tomorrow afternoon, April 13, to Bodega Bay! One activity will be to take estuarine plankton samples using the biology department's boat. Until today, I didn't know if the trip was ON since one of the engines was in the shop. But it is ready, and we will meet out there at the boat dock in Westside Park (inside Bodega Bay) at 12:30. If you are interested in this field trip (instead of the ones on April 19 and April 28), please call me by tomorrow morning before 10:00 a.m. so I can give you directions!
(b) The quiz on Wed. will be a takehome quiz; I'll be lecturing on Chapter 12 first.

Just want to update you on the chapters to cover after Spring Break:
We will skip Chapter 9 and cover Chapter 10 and Chapter 12 on April 12. Quiz #5 will be moved to Wed., April 14.
I'm going to omit Chapters 16, 17 and 18 from the schedule, and give you a revised schedule for the last part of the semester.
Student Presentations will be moved to the week of May 3 and May 10 (so cross out the ones for Apr. 14, Apr. 19, and Apr. 26). Soon I'll have sign-up sheets in class for May 3, May 5, May 10 and May 12 presentations.
(a)There will not be a quiz on Monday, April 12 since we just had the Midterm Exam today.
(b) The handout on writing guidelines for a research paper (that I gave you today) is the format for both your Semester Research Project and your Unknown Determination Report.
Include a "Materials & Methods" section only for your Unknown. The other research paper is scientific literature-based only, not drawn from your personal lab or field research.
(a) Lab Test #2 (on March 22
and March 24) will cover the following lab exercises: 8, 22, 24, 25,
and 26
Also be able to distinguish Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria;
microscope magnifications; prokaryotic vs eukaryotic; lab
techniques.
(b) Please let me know if the Chapter Summary answer keys have any mistakes. They were provided by the textbook publishers and if you notice a mistake (make sure it is a mistake, though, please), I want to make the correction on the web page. Thanks very much.
The quiz on Monday, Mar. 15, will include information from Chapter 5 (subsection Energy Production on p. 120 in 8th Ed. to end of chapter); and from Chapter 6, up through Plate Count and Serial Dilutions (p. 174 in 8th Ed.).
Also please review your
lecture notes.
2/27/2004
Lab Test #1 (on March 1 and March 3) will cover the following lab exercises: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9
After lecture on those two days, there will an approximate break of one hour, with the lab test beginning at about 10:30.
