Some of MY OBJECTIVES for teaching this
course:
1. To
increase your awareness
and appreciation for microscopic
organisms in your environment.
2. To help you
understand the
role of microbes and microbiology in
so many aspects of society.
3. To introduce you to
some
laboratory methods and special
techniques used in microbiological research.
4. To demonstrate major
unifying principles that apply to all life,
including microbes.
5. To help you develop
knowledge and confidence to pursue further
studies in the microbiological sciences.
GRADING:
Three Midterm Exams: 100
pts each x 3 = 300 points
Final Exam = 200 points
Three Laboratory Tests:
50 pts each = 150 points
Six Quizzes @ 20 pts
each = 100 points (The lowest quiz
score will be dropped.)
Online assignments in
Moodle: 100 points
Lab Book Exercises
= Collected 3 X for a total of 100
points
“Unknown” Determination
Report = 50 points
Semester Research

Presentation = 50 points
Attendance and
Contribution to Class Activities = 50 points
Grades will be assigned as follows:
90 - 100 % A
80 - 89 % B
70 - 79 % C
60 - 69 % D
lower than 60% F
Plus and minus grades will be assigned to the upper and lower % of each letter grade (except A).
Students
who wish to be graded in a non-traditional mode (CR/NC, credit/ nocredit) have
this option. CR
will be assigned
for an earned grade of C- or better.
Late
make-up exams must be scheduled at
least 48 hours in advance and require permission of the instructor.
Make-up
exams
will
be
penalized
10%
unless a written medical excuse is provided.

is
expected
that
you
attend every class period!
You are expected to conduct yourself professionally in
all aspects of this course.
Please

RULES
FOR SUCCESS in MICROBIOLOGY:
1.
Read assigned chapter(s)
before you come to class.
2. Read lab exercises before coming to your laboratory session.
3. Make an outline of the laboratory procedures for each pab
period.
4.
Attend every class period.
Focus on the topics and listen "actively."
5. Take charge of your own
learning! Study for understanding of the concepts, not just
memorization of "facts".
6. Be alert and take good
notes. Go over your notes after class and make extra notes from
your own reading.
7.
Attend all lab periods and
perform all lab exercises thoughtfully and well.
8. Consider getting
together
with other students outside of class to discuss the material and study
for exams. Form a study group!
9.
Above all, determine to do
your very best this semester!
