Trip to MacKerricher State Beach
MacKerricher State Park
Map and Directions
MacKerricher State Park is approximately
3 miles North of Fort Bragg and 0.5 mile
West of Highway 1.
Set in the world of the intertidal flats and tidepools, the rocky
shores of Laguna Point dominates MacKerricher State Park.
From the east:
Take Highway 20 from Willets west to Fort Bragg, and then turn
north on Highway 1.
From the south:
Take Highway 101 north to Cloverdale and Highway 128 (watch for
the sign so you don't miss the right turn onto Highway 128 before
Cloverdale) to Highway 1 and continue north past the towns of
Mendocino and Fort Bragg.
Everyone:
- Turn at Highway 1 Marker 65.06 onto
Mill Creek Drive. Go to past Lake Cleone and under the
Old Haul Road to the paved Parking Lot that is facing
Cleone Beach (not to be confused with Lake Cleone!)
- We will meet at Lake Cleone at 12:00 noon.at
the picnic tables. There we will work on identifying plants around
the lake, a nice gentle walk with a variety of habitat types. We
will cross over to MacKerricher Beach in the mid-afternoon to
observe the low tide and do some ecological studies in the
intertidal zones, and be there until around 5:00 or 5:30. Please
bring your guidebooks asa well as laminated invertebrate card
(hang it on a cord around your neck or over your
shoulder).
- The trail out of the parking lot follows a
raised boardwalk from the northwest corner of the parking
lot adjacent to Cleone Beach.
My memory is that we can park there and go
to Lake Cleone. Look for the entrance to Lake Cleone in that area.
