Prerequisite:

Previous or concurrent enrollment of P210B or equivalent. This is an algebra-trig based course. Physics 100 is not sufficient. If you are using this as a G.E. requirement and don’t have the necessary prerequisite, you might want to consider taking it credit/no credit. You are expected to have a working knowledge of algebra and trigonometry plus some logarithm usage.

Subjects:

Continued study in statistical error analysis. Experiments in Waves, electricity and magnetism, radioactivity and optics.

Materials:

Manual for sale in class $10.

Lab Notebook, quadrille-ruled. Write directly into lab book. Xerox raw (original) data for inclusion in reports or use carbon copy. Your lab book may be checked mid semester.

Keep track of all returned work

Reports and homework due 1 week later. 10% grade reduction for late reports. After 2 weeks the instructor can refuse to accept them. Talk to me as soon as possible if you have extenuating circumstances. To pass you cannot miss more than 3 classes. Have returned work to resubmit if there is a problem with recording the grades.

Making up missed work:

You cannot make up a missed quiz. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped. If you miss 2 quizzes, you will not be given credit for one of them. (10 points) If you were absent the previous week you can still take the quiz, review the experiment details before coming, contact your lab partner. If you missed an experiment requiring a lab report you can come in during the last week of classes to make up a substitute experiment without penalty. If you miss two, one will be graded a zero.

Total possible points after 1 quiz dropped = 130. Your final grade will be based on the percentage of points earned. In borderline cases (i.e. B+ to A-) it’s up to my discretion to consider overall work, improvements made and participation, in assigning a grade. You should be successful with quizzes if you come, take notes, and do the experiment. Try to understand the significance of the lab before you leave. Keeping a complete lab book is a good skill and makes report writing much easier.
