Take the poll at Zhongwen.com and find out if the Monty Python song "I like Chinese" is offensive to Chinese people. There is also much fabulous information on writing Chinese characters. Might as well go ahead and buy their book, Chinese Characters : A Genealogy & Dictionary. It looks really great. Read the reviews on amazon. But, order it from VarsityBooks.com, where it's cheapest. Drop by FlamingoWorld to pick up a $10 off coupon for VarsityBooks.com. Look for the coupon on the "Coupons H-Z" webpage. You'll never guess where it is .... that's right! The V's!

Hope you noticed that the AOL/Time Warner merger was "one of those rare events that seems to change the world overnight," comparable to "the 13 colonies defeat[ing] the British." That's USA Today's comment. Those knuckleheads! If you'd like real analysis, check out FAIR's webpage on Time Warner and AOL.

I've never been to Ohio, but if I ever get there, I sure hope I run into one of the Loveland Frogs! Gee, you'd think living all these years in California, I'd have glimpsed at least one Phantom Kangaroo.

Leonardo DiCaprio as Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars' Episode 2...My mellow is totally harshed at the thought. You'd better hustle over to Jason Bayne's page and check it out. Vote while you're there!

Dig these haiku by my friend, Chris:

Panda Cam. I watch,
their big bellies full of twig,
warm,sun-soaked panda

These next ones are dedicated to our pal, Tim, who just got a palm! Guess I should mention that I just got one, too. But, it's too painful to talk about... Yes, something bad happened. I told you... I can't talk about it.

Palm Pilot, Geek tool
Fits in pocket, beams knowledge
I feel the palm call

Tim, bitter are we?
Grasp the Palm in your sweaty hand
Beam cynicism

SSU is hiring PeopleSoft to implement it's big ol' administrative system (student info, financial and human resources stuff). I wonder what will happen?

More personality/career/relationships/health tests than you can shake a stick at. If you simply must know.

Or follow Saul Bellow's advice...
Socrates said, 'The unexamined life is not worth living.' My revision is, 'But the examined life makes you wish you were dead.'"

Back in December 1999, I posted a couple haiku to SFGate's Y2K Haiku Contest Board. I didn't win or anything, but I like them. So I'm posting them here. You may notice a theme...

blame

Blame must be assigned.
Y2G or net traffic?
Panda cam still down.

longing

Oh, baby panda.
How I miss your sleeping form,
sometimes you wiggle.

A little while back I watched this flick called, "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing" with William Holden and Jennifer Jones. It was one of those irritating sorts of 50's films filled with (mostly) unrequited love. Although, it was cool seeing Hong Kong in 1955! Anyway, there's one particularly memorable scene, where our Eurasian heroine's Chinese Dad welcomes her home for a visit. He tells her, "You are at home. We shall now have tea and speak of absurdities." Oh, man I laughed! I couldn't believe he said this, it seemed so out-of-place in this film. Still makes me smile.

Some great images from Chicken Run, a new film coming out this summer. It's directed by Nick Park. You know... the Wallace & Gromit guy! Oh, you might want to check out the story, too.

Hmmm... I don't believe I've mentioned the pandas today... oh! Oops, there ya go!

I actually wanted to test this blogger browser shortcut. It works! But only after I found an informative post about bookmarklets, netscape and the mac in the blogger forum. Thank god for newsgroups and forums (fora?)!

You'll need to check the 12/8/99 issue of The Onion to find out how we're coping with our crippling depression and loneliness. It's accompanied with a lovely graphic. I prefer "Staring at wall as sun slowly sets, casting bedroom in darkness".

How I love this article from the onion. Still one of my all time favorites. Obviously, I appreciate subtle humor. If you need to read more on the H-Dog, go to the onion archives and do a find on Herbert Kornfeld.

Extreme panda action today! The mama panda, Bai Yun, has been romping about outside. Okay, mostly lying around snacking. There's been alot of panda tummy exposure today. Knew you'd want to know.

I feel I must mention Linky & Dinky. It's one of those "nifty links" sorts of websites. There's also a mailing list. I can't resist the name! They've been around awhile and their website is what we refer to here in the library as "butt-ugly". I like it.

Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. called the United States "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today". He said that it was "on the wrong side of a world revolution." This info comes courtesy of the Institute for Public Accuracy. They've got more interesting info about King.

Ever wonder why traffic jams up for no apparent reason? You're poking along and when you finally get up to the jam, you see... nothing. Not a dang thing. Discover just what the heck that was all about on the Science Hobbyist's page on Traffic Waves: physics for bored commuters.

While you're messing around, check out the current tool I'm digging.

Guess my whining had some effect... Today, when I visited MSN's bandwidth speed test, I got readings around 1400 kbps.

I was up late last night, getting my club's new website up. I think it looks pretty good, but there's not alot there yet. Hope to get more up soon, but there's just not enough time! sigh...

There are many internet and web searching tutorials out there. But, I just ran across one (courtesy of my boss) called Web Searching, Sleuthing and Sifting. This one looks really great, it's done by Angela Elkordy, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Electronic Resources, The Sage Colleges.

Boy, I'm sure glad I stumbled on Searchability, just in case I felt low on search engines...

Geez, I just went to MSN's bandwidth speed test and my suspicions are confirmed... my connection at work really bites. My connection speeds range from a mighty 300+ kbps to 560+ kbps on this "T1" line. Hmph!

Caught in the act at MacWorld! Hooboy! Blogging at MacWorld just seemed like the right thing to do. And I'm using one of the fab green machines, one of my favorite colors. Gosh, I feel so famous!

But, I really got on to share a good source of Chinese Opera links. Because, when you're obsessing about Chinese opera, you just gotta go with it. Trust me.

So, this sunday the Beijing Kunju Opera is performing at the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts. I think we're going to get tickets. Beijing (or Peking) Opera is really keen, very dramatic and beautiful. But, I like all kinds of Chinese Opera. Another nifty Chinese Opera link.

Uh oh, here I am at macworld expo and I'm blogging! But I got a great deal on a book for Adobe GoLive, called Real World Adobe GoLive 4. I definitely wanted it because not only is it a peachpit press publication, but one of the authors is also a writer for TidBits, one of my favorite mailing lists. Definite score. Boy, do my feet hurt.

I'm going to take advantage of this blog and blurt the good news! My mom just phoned me and her MRI came back negative. We're all so HAPPY! Okay, so she has lung cancer, but she doesn't have brain cancer and that is a really terribly groovy thing. You may know my mom from ebay. She is the fabulous Garree. My day is definitely made.
