Oradour-sur-Glane, also called the "Martyr Village". During WW2, the Nazis rounded up everyone in town and shot or gassed them.

One man was shot, but not killed and dragged himself out of a pile of corpses to freedom.

When they gassed the women and children, one woman was able to escape, after they pumped too much gas in and blew out a window.

Those two were the only ones in the village to survive, except for those who had left town for work, earlier in the day.

The Nazis committed this crime as retribution for the death of a German officer, believed to be killed by the Resistance. They burned the town after killing the citizens.

The French government decided to preserve the remains of the town, as a memorial and reminder of this terrible act. This is a sad and silent place.
