07/04/01 The gardens at Villandry are exceptional! Patterned plantings, a maze, herb garden, etc... |
More of Villandry's amazing gardens. These are some of the most beautiful gardens I've ever seen. |
07/05/01 Pretty flowers in Mortemart, where we stopped for a delicious picnic lunch. |
Church in Mortemart. Mortemart is near Limoges. |
I'm standing in front of some cute homes and shops in Mortemart. |
Dang that car's tiny! About the smallest car I've seen in France. |
Oradour-sur-Glane, also called the "Martyr Village". During WW2, the Nazis rounded up everyone in town and shot or gassed them. |
One man was shot, but not killed and dragged himself out of a pile of corpses to freedom. |
When they gassed the women and children, one woman was able to escape, after they pumped too much gas in and blew out a window. |
Those two were the only ones in the village to survive, except for those who had left town for work, earlier in the day. |
The Nazis committed this crime as retribution for the death of a German officer, believed to be killed by the Resistance. They burned the town after killing the citizens. |
The French government decided to preserve the remains of the town, as a memorial and reminder of this terrible act. This is a sad and silent place. |
