EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION MINOR

Information Packet and Application Forms

The Minor in Early Childhood Education (ECE), provides preparation for students interested in the care and education of young children (birth to eight years old). The Minor is useful for students interested in pursuing careers involving work with young children from birth through eight years old in various fields, such as, Education, Nursing, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, and others.

It can be combined with a variety of Majors such as:
Human Development
Psychology
Liberal Studies
American Multicultural Studies
Chicano Latino Studies
Environmental Studies
Kinesiology

The Minor provides the prerequisite courses for the Elementary Education Teching Credential, as well as the required field experience. It also provides solid preparation for students interested in pursuing the Special Education Teaching Credential.

Requisites:

Students in the ECE Minor must have Junior-year status, or permission of the ECE advisor. They also must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and maintain a 2.5 GPA throughout the program. No grade may be lower than C - .

Work practitioners with a B.A. may apply up to 9 upper division units of the minor toward the M.A. degree, ECE concentration. These units may count as electives or as cognate courses. Courses chosen need to have grade B or higher and be approved by ECE advisor.

Transfer students:

Transfer students from Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) may waive EDMS 420 if they have taken Child 10 and Child 90. These two lower division courses combined, address the topics in the upper division course EDMS 420. Course waiver is approved if the grade in each of these courses is B or higher. This grade policy exists at present for students who request a waiver for EDMS 420.

In addition JC transfer students from Child Development Programs can use 9 units of their course work for the electives. (in addition to the unit transfer mentioned with regard to EDMS 420). Course grades need to be C or higher.

Relationship to Child Development Permit:

The ECE Minor core courses are approved courses for the Child Development Permit, a certification required for educators who wish to work in State funded preschools, such as Head-Start. This permit is offered by the California Commission for Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) of the California Department of Education. At present students can apply for the Permit through the Child Development Consortium. Accreditation through the School of Education at Sonma State Univerisity is in process.

Course Work

The Early Childhood Education Minor involves 24 units of course work: 15 units of upper division core courses and 9 units of electives, which may be lower division courses. The courses can be completed in four semester, together with the course work for the Major.
