Guidelines and Assessment Rubric

Analysis of Newspaper or Weekly Magazine article.

1. Choose an article from a newspaper (Chronicle, Press Democrat, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, etc....) or a weekly or monthly magazine (Newsweek, Time, Business Week, Atlantic, etc..). that deals with a topic we have discussed in class or is related to the topics discussed so far in class. Add a photocopy of the article to your paper.

2. Identify the issue and briefly summarize the position taken in the article: for example, class size, second language learning, immigrant students, NCLB, testing, textbooks, multicultural education, teacher preparation, high stakes exit exams, etc.

3. Compare the position taken in the article to concepts presented in one of the course readings.Bring in a quote to illustrate the comparison. Explain why you selected that quote.

4. State whether you agree or disagree with the position taken in the article. Give reasons for your position, referring to your own experience, to class discussions, and to concepts from the readings. Propose alternative solutions, if it is appropriate to do so.

5. Add Bibliography

Length: Minimum 800 words (approximately two pages, line spacing 1.5 )
