Start ArcView as you have learned to do before: click on the Start menu, then on Programs, and in the ArcView menu find the ArcView icon and click once on it (or you can use the ArcView folder or icon on screen if available). If you're using a demo copy of ArcView, start it and load an exercise, then close any open views or other documents before continuing.
Resize the ArcView and Netscape windows so you can see both as you work.
To prepare for adding geographic data to your project, create
a new View as you've done before. If you're fuzzy on the
procedure: make sure the Views item
in the Project Window is highlighted, then
click the New button. Enlarge the view if necessary
to make it fill most of the ArcView window.
Rename the view using View-Properties -- call it Raster/Vector Data.
Even though there are no data in it yet, save your project to enable easier saving later. From the File menu choose Save Project. In the dialog box, change the drive if necessary to U:, then change the directory to your personal folder (or if you're not in the GIS Lab, choose another drive and directory for your work). Type Exer5 as the project name in the upper left of the dialog box. Then click OK.
Remember to save your work often -- say every 10
minutes. You can just click the Save Project icon
to do so.
Also, keep in mind that if you save a project and want to come back later and continue working, you can open it either by first starting ArcView and then using File-Open Project to find it, or you can simply use Windows NT Explorer to find the project in your personal directory and double-click on it. This second option will start ArcView and load your project for you.
