Exercise 3: Point Reyes, California Quad

This is a portion of the USGS 7.5-Minute Quad for Point Reyes, California, just north of San Francisco along the coast.  This is very near the San Andreas Fault, although the fault is not on the portion of the map shown here.  This portion is on the south side of Pt. Reyes, where Drake's Estero, an estuary, opens to the sea.

This page also has questions based on Campbell chapter 10 on landforms.  Compare the maps to those found in Campbell to help determine what you're seeing.  After studying the landforms, answer the questions below.

Questions on this page

  1. The landform labeled Limantour Spit is composed of sand, as indicated on the map.  The sand is deposited by a current traveling along the coast.  From what direction is the current moving that is depositing this sand -- from the east or west?
  2. According to the map, what two types of vegetation are growing along Glenbrook Creek?
