METRIC CONVERSION HANDOUT

International science these days uses metric measurements. Here is a listing of metric conversions that may be useful in this course. The more you use metric measurements, the easier they are. Eventually you may find you prefer them to English measures, since they're so much easier to manipulate in calculations.

Distance

1 kilometer (km) = 0.6214 mile
1 mile = 1.609 km
1 meter (m) = 3.281 ft
1 foot = 0.3048 m
1 centimeter (cm) = 0.3937 inch
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 millimeter (mm) = 0.0394 inch
1 inch = 25.4 mm

Area

1 square kilometer (km2) = 0.386 square mile
1 square mile = 2.59 square km
1 hectare (ha) = 2.471 acres
1 acre = 0.4047 hectare

Velocity

1 m/sec = 3.6 km/hr = 2.237 mi/hr
1 ft/sec = 0.6818 mi/hr = 1.097 km/hr
1 km/hr = 0.2278 m/sec = 0.9113 ft/sec
1 mi/hr = 1.4767 ft/sec = 0.4470 m/sec

Discharge

1 m3/sec = 35.32 cfs (cubic feet per second)
1 cfs = 0.0283 m3/sec = 2447 m3/day
1 cfs for one day = 1.98 acre feet (ac-ft)
(1 cfs = 1 in/hr of runoff from one acre)
(1 ac-ft = 325,851 gal)

Temperature

Convert from Fahrenheit (F) to Celsius (C)

oC = (oF - 32)/1.8

Convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit

oF = (oC x 1.8) + 32
