new hope for parkinsons - GDNF
By penny, on 10/16/2003.
I am involved in Phase II of the study on GDNF for the treatment of Parkinsons symptoms and I can tell you my neurologist and the neurosurgeon are extremely excited about it. I am the first person in North America to have had this operation and am in the midst of the study at the moment. The surgery was done in August and I started injections 2 weeks later. It is a double blind study so I don't know whether or not I am getting a placebo or the GDNF but I will let you know my progress in a couple of months. This is apparently the first time a drug has actually REVERSED the disease by promoting the growth of brain cells that produce dopamine. Some doctors are liking its importance to the discovery of L-Dopa.
