It is a well known effect of alcohol to cause relaxation, however, untill recently, it has not been understood why alcohol has this effect. A team of researchers have discovered that alcohol opens an ionic channel, allowing the release of potassium ions. This causes a decrease in brain function and is perceived as relaxation.
