Creatine a compound found in most animals has been isolated synthetically and has been used as a dietary supplement. It is involved in the creatin phosphate system which works with the ATP system to provide energy for muscular excertions. ATP is the primary source of energy that is used by our bodies. This is done by a reaction that converts the adenosine molecule between ATP and ADP.
The stored supplies of ATP in the muscles are quite small and once they are exhasted they must be replenished. This is where the creatine phosphate system comes in; creatine phosphate donates a phosphate goroup to the ADP and therfore converting it back to ATP. (Andrew Chen, 1998.Berkeley Medical Journal)
In a study done by Kreider and published in the 1998 issue of Medicine and Science in sports and Exercise. Kreider's findings were that creatine promoted gains in isotonic lifting volume and sprint performance. There was also an increase in muscle mass by two kilograms in a months period.
