Washington Post, High Success Rate in Study Lends Promise to New Treatment

Hepatitis C is estimated to to infect 4 million people in the US and 170 million worldwide and is the leading cause of liver transplants.
A German study found that 42-43 newly infected patients who received treatment became virus free from Hepatitis C. The treatment is a six months of interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin. Similar studies have been done but this is the most successful to date.
This success highlights the need for greater diagnosis. Because Hepatitis C is symptomatic in fewer then 20% of the cases. Diagnosis and treatment are critical early on to increase success. The estimated cost of the treatment is 6,000 and the resulting therapy 24,000.
