Sugar and spice are common ingridients in food, but as technology plows ahead, additives have become more complex in their nature and their long term effects are still not wholly understood. I read an article in a magazine called Organic Style, which is not very scientific, I know. The title was: Raising Healthy Kids. The article mentions various hazards to avoid, among them being food additives. Here is the run down: "saccharin causes cancer in lab animals; caffeine overstimulates the heart and alters the metabolism of brain cells; aspartame affects brain receptors and overstimulates the brain; olestra causes diarrhea, bloating, and stool leakage." Yuk!
The article also mentions that "baby bottle nipples and pacifiers that are made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or other plastics can leach potentially harmful chemicals called pthalates. Pthalates can mimic natural body hormones and may interfere with normal body functions."
