KEY TO SYMBOLS AND ABBREVIATIONS

*

an especially useful recorded resource. These are mostly compilations which provide a cross-section of examples relevant to the week's listening focus

+

videos that will be shown in class

CASS

cassette tape. Most of these are dubbed recordings of NW phonos; see NW below.

CD

compact disc. I have listed as many compact discs as possible; these are your preferred listening medium

PHONO

LP phonograph record. The majority of the library collection is LP's; please handle them with care!

NW

an LP record whose record jacket contains extensive background material and documentation about the material on the associated cassette tape, usually including text of all songs. These are always excellent choices for outside listening whenever they are availalbe.

The call numbers for NW records you should check out with cassettes for listening appear in the list as /NW???., with the NW number in boldface. Always ask for the NW recording along with the tape; reading at least a portion of the documentary material is an important part of your listening. But please listen to the cassette tape, to preserve the fragile LP record.

MEDIA CENTER RESOURCES

SPECIAL NOTE

Make sure part of your Media Center work for this week is watching a video of a musical; you may view a musical you own, view one of the videos listed below in the Media Center or check out and view a musical of your choice from a video store, borrow from a friend, etc.. You are to write your Listening Report about the musical you see. Modify the usual format for your response in these ways:

A. objective description: Answer the following questions.

1. How would you compare the amount of action that takes place in the story with a movie or play treating the same story? Is there more action or less? Is the story itself more or less complicated than you would expect to find in a play? a novel?

2. What different roles do you find for the music? What do musical numbers do? (Possibilities: advance the story; allow a character to "think" on stuage, like a soliloquoy in Shakespeare; allow characters to interact; make it possible for more than one "thing"--idea, attitude, feeling--to be expressed at the same time; emphasize a dramatic point--and any others you can think of)

3. Choose the piece in the show you like best and write about it as you usually would for a single piece.

B. Omit functional description--all musicals share a common function

C. Critical response should be to the show as a whole.
