Media Center or check out and view a
musical of your choice from a video store,
borrow from a friend, etc.. You are to
write your Listening Report about the
musical you see. Modify the usual format
for your response in these ways:
A. objective description: Answer the
following questions.
1. How would you compare the
amount of action that takes place in
the story with a movie or play treating
the same story? Is there more action or
less? Is the story itself more or less
complicated than you would expect to
find in a play? a novel?
2. What different roles do you find
for the music? What do musical numbers
do? (Possibilities: advance the story;
allow a character to "think" on stuage,
like a soliloquoy in Shakespeare; allow
characters to interact; make it
possible for more than one
"thing"--idea, attitude, feeling--to be
expressed at the same time; emphasize a
dramatic point--and any others you can
think of)
3. Choose the piece in the show you
like best and write about it as you
usually would for a single piece.
B. Omit functional description--all
musicals share a common function
C. Critical response should be to the
show as a whole.
