COURSE OVERVIEW

A PERSPECTIVE

Survey of U. S. music is a panoramic listening tour of the remarkable musical landscape that is America's music. The principal sourcee material for the class is music you hear, in and out of class. A considerable amount of class time will be devoted to class performance, guest performers, videos and recordings of U. S. music from every style and period. Outside readings, listening and concert attendance are also an important part of our work.

Music 150 satisfies 3 units of lower division General Education in category C1 (Fine Arts).

All of us use music in a variety of ways; but, too often, we just accept the music that is offered us by what Kingman calls "the great American hit machine". This course is not just about music but about the way Americans--most particularly including you--have made and used music in the past, about what music meant to them (you), and about the potential music has for enriching the life of individuals (you again) and of society as a whole. If, at the end of the class, you have begun to think deeply about your own relationship to music, the class will have served its most important purpose.

CLASS GOALS

1. to develop an awareness of, and appreciation for, the range of musical activities in the U. S. from the colonial period to the present, including religious music, folk music, pop music, jazz, ethnic traditions and fine art music

2. to examine the changing roles of music in the U. S., with emphasis on the ways music can both reflect and support societal chang
