Concert Responses |
You are required to attend ten (10) concerts featuring European music. For each concert you are to write up a brief Response Paper (1-2 pages typed). Your Response Paper should follow this format. |
1. Write a brief description of the event--when, where, who performed, what kind of music, what was the music used for, dress of the performers, nature of program provided, etc. Also include information about the characteristics and responsiveness of the audience--who, dress, degree of enthusiasm. What about this particular event as a whole stood out in your mind? |
2. Choose one piece of European music from the concert. For that piece provide |
a. a thumbnail description of the piece---composer, title, when written, instruments used, (unless the entire concert is one instrument or one grouping of instruments); genre; style |
b. a brief response to the piece and to its performance, including characteristics of the piece which struck you and the reason you chose this particular piece |
Make sure you write a response, not just reactions; your feelings about the music are an appropriate part of your response, but include facts about the pieces and/or the performance as reasons for your feelings. |

WHICH CONCERTS ?.......Here is a link listing on-campus concerts tha includes European Music Concerts; at least seven of your concerts must come from this list. Many of these concerts are free; those not free to everyone are free to you as an SSU student if you come to the box office 10 minutes before the performance and get student rush tickets. (You will need to show your student ID; no student rush if the house is sold out. One student rush ticket per SSU ID.) I encourage you also to attend off-campus European music events--Santa Rosa symphony, Cinnabar Theater musical performances, community opera performances, choral group performances, chamber music--any concert which features at least some European music; check the Press Democrat for weekly listings. When in doubt, check with me first! |
DUE DATES: There are no set dates for turning in Concert Responses, But they should be written and turned in immediately after you attend a concert. Please turn in Concert Reports as soon as they are completed, to avoid a crush at the end of the semester. NO LATE REPORTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. PLAN AHEAD! |
GRADING Each Response Paper is worth 2% of your grade; 20% of your final grade in the class comes from these papers. Response Papers will not be graded for content beyond the guidelines given above; attendance at the events and thoughtful completion of Response Papers as above will give you full credit. Your credit really comes from attending the concert and responding to it in writing. |
