Listen (Brief 4th Edition), by Joseph Kerman and Gary Tomlinson, published by Bedford-St. Martins. Accompanying the text are six CD's. Both text and CD's are required; they are available in the campus bookstore. Other listening and video resources are housed in the Multi-Media section of the Tech Center. |
WEBSITE |
The Listen book has a website--http://www.bedfordstmartins.com/listen/ The website is an important resource for the class. It includes flash cards, much supplementary materials and chapter quizzes. Exam material will be drawn in large part from the flash cards and quizzes. The quizzes are also a source of extra credit for the class. For each chapter quic you take as an aid to your study you will have one-half point added to your final grade, up to a maximum of ten points. (Only one quiz per chapter will be counted.) Follow the instructions on the website to send me notification that you have taken the quiz. |
ACTIVITIES |

ATTENDANCE POLICY |
In-class listening to and discussion of heard music, and discussion of ideas about music and its role in society, are a crucial part of this class. If you are not here, you neither contribute to that part of the class nor derive the benefit from it. For that reason, I take attendance using a sign-in sheet every day. If you are sick or have another reason you feel is justified, send me an e-mail. If you are going to miss a class, you must normally let me know before the class, or at the latest by the next class meeting. If I do not hear from you by the next class, the absence is unexcused. You may up to three unexcused absences without penalty; for each subsequent absence I lower your final grade by 2 points. |
LATE WORK |
Concert Response Papers may be turned in at any time up to the final exam; but I urge you to write your responses immediately after you attend a concert and turn the responses in at that time. These papers must follow the format described on the Concert Responses page to receive full credit. |
Intensive Listening Responses are due on the dates specified on the Schedule of reading and listening assignments. Late papers will be penalized 10% points for each calendar day late. |
Exams may be made up only by prior arrangement. |
