SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH AND EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE BRIEF Note: Pay attention to the point distribution as this is how the different areas are weighted for the final grade. Not that length necessarily equals quality, but if an area is worth 25% it needs to be longer than one paragraph! Remember, be parsimonious! This is a summary brief, not a literature review. Short analytical sentences are preferred. Example of a well done Summary Brief Note: the format has changed since this paper was done!

1. Ask the Evidenced-Based PICO question: Remember: medicine focuses on diseases and pathology. Nursing focuses on the human response to health states and conditions. We need to understand physiology and astrophysical and the human response. However the focus for the EBP summary brief is that human response. 10% Population: Intervention or Area of Interest: Comparison: (you may not have one of these!) Outcome: PICO Question: State your topic of interest using the PICO framework.
Background: Tell the story of the issue and why it deserves our attention. The story is background – not evidence. Save the evidence for later in summary of evidence. Objective: What is it that you wish to gain? This is a restatement of the question – it sets up a focus.
Search for Evidence: Strategies and databases reviewed . Selection criteria: English publications within the past 5 years, research based articles (levels I to VII). Older references may be seminal and can be used. Search databases such as CINAHL and Med Line and guidelines such as Cochran and AHRQ, resources specific to the course and topic. Summary of Evidence: The statements in this section imply that you have analyzed the evidence and are confident of the statements you submit. S subheadings provide clarity and help the reader to understand. Include evidence that is pro and con. If there are no cons (“down-sides”), then state so.
Summary of Evidence from Organizations, Experience and/or Experts in the Specialty: Ex: Nurse practice acts, nursing organizations, Healthy People 2020.
Stakeholders/Change Agents: Who, what organizations are concerned/ will benefit from/ be affected by this proposal. List the interested parties. Patients, students, agencies, Joint Commission, etc.
Feasibility: Briefly integrate the evidence with stakeholder influence to inform evidence-based recommendations. Evidence supports X and stakeholders are likely to support or refute this because…. Apply the Evidence: Make logical, feasible recommendations supported by the evidence. Be specific! Use a bulleted format for clarity. If you are recommending more study is needed, state why you are taking this position . References: Special Tips: Make the final product a quick read for those interested in the issue AND make a compelling argument for the solution – or Apply the Evidence. That is how you become an activist – influence people to take the action. Spell check and grammar check. If you have a writing learning curve to conquer get a buddy to read your paper and/or read each sentence out loud. Some of the sentence structure errors are edits and most can be corrected by grammar check. You don’t need a face page. Yes, use APA. Single space with a space between sections and bullets.
