4) Maria Rosso is a 34 year old woman who is pregnant with her second child. She is now 12 weeks pregnant. She is 5-4 and her pre-pregnancy weight was 144. She now weighs 156. She works part time as a cashier. She is an excellent cook and likes to cook for her husband and 4 year old child. She usually brings in some kind of "goodies" for the office staff when she comes in for her prenatal appointment. Her finances are adequate. She has no food allergies and has no cultural or religious food restrictions.

You do a 24 hour diet recall and she tells you:
Breakfast: Oatmeal with honey, a glass of orange juice, 2 slices of cinnamon toast with butter, a PN vitamin.

Snack: 4 homemade peanut butter cookies and a glass of milk.

Lunch: Tomato soup, a bacon & cheese sandwich, 1 piece of homemade cherry pie, lemonade.

Dinner: Spaghetti & meatballs, green salad, 2 slices of bread with butter, a piece of carrot cake (homemade), a glass of milk, hot tea.

Snack: 2 slices of cinnamon toast, 2 oranges.

a) Based on Tables 14-1 and 14-3, what is Maria lacking and what is in excess:

b) What suggestions would you make to Maria to improve her diet (be specific. What should be replaced and with what other food?). How will you get "buy in" from Maria?
