N 340 Women's Health & Illness in The Expanding Family & N345 Clinical Practicum

N 345 Women's Health

Clinical Instructor (Sutter): Cathy Clark RN, FNP, MSN

Phone: 545-2303

Clinical Instructor (Kaiser): Karen Clark

Phone: 529-2467. Texting will be best and will discuss with you at your orientation.

Welcome: Further down the page are links to the clinical paperwork required for this course. Following is an introduction to N345 including policies, how to complete the paperwork, and an overview of the clinical experiences.

About Cathy Clark: Cathy Clark has been an RN for 33 years, an FNP for 20 years and she has specialized in Women and Children Services for 28 years as a Clinical Nurse Leader. Cathy is, and always has been a political activist for women and children in areas such as Reproductive Rights, Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, Equal Education (Title IX), and most recently in allotment of health care monies.

About Karen Clark: Karen Clark is the full-time faculty coordinator for the Maternal/Child and Pediatrics area at Santa Rosa Junior College    She obtained her BSN/MSN Degree from SSU as a Family Nurse Practitioner.  Karen has worked for a busy OB/GYN clinic as an FNP along with over 26 years of nursing experience in the local hospitals. Her expertise is in the Maternal/Child nursing field.

We are passionate about women's health, but we know it may not be your "calling" and will not be disappointed if you are not inspired. Do take advantage of every learning opportunity though. If you know after this semester you will never set foot in an L&D or a community clinic for women, keep thinking "Transferable skills." Think about: "What can I learn during this rotation that will make me a better nurse wherever I chose to go?"

Basic Hospital Information: NEW INFO! Here is where you will find the particulars for Sutter and Kaiser

Paperwork for Sutter: STAR Packet Complete the three page evaluation and sign the HIPPA form. Bring with you to the first day of clinical. This will take at least a couple of hours to complete. You may want to work in groups and share information. However every one needs to submit the paperwork. If you were at Sutter last Fall and have already completed this paperwork, you do not have to do it again!! You do need to bring a short note that you sign explaining you completed the STAR Packet in Spring 2011.

HIPPA Regulations: These are really common sense. However please take a few minutes to review them

Skills and Orientation Day: Review the skills list from the sophomore year beforehand. I have bolded those items most pertinent to N 345. Bring your fundamentals text also.

Please bring the following paperwork with you to your skills day.

Clinical databases and Keystone Issue Clinical Journals (see below)

Medications: You must bring this information with each time you are in clinical. You may bring your drug book with these medications marked and highlighted for expedient access. You may also use electronic source such as Epocrates.

Clinical skills check off list

Postpartum and Newborn Cheat Sheet

Initial Newborn Exam Cheat Sheet

Clinical paperwork: You are to make copies of each of these and bring them with you to clinical. Since you will not know for sure which area in the hospital you will be on any particular day, make sure you have copies of the L&D, Postpartum and Newborn Patient data collection forms. You will submit one each week.

  • For Sutter: Post in your private Moodle discussion forum by 10 pm on Friday evening. This includes your concept map for your patient.
  • For Kaiser:

L&D Patient data collection and Keystone Issue Clinical Journal:

Postpartum data collection and Keystone Issue Clinical Journal:

Newborn (NICU) data collection and Keystone Clinical Journal

Gordon's Functional Health Patterns Summary: You will be submitting 3 concept maps (L & D, Postpartum, NICU) using these 11 health patterns. You will use Nursing Diagnoses for these concept maps. Why do we use NDs? Well, my take is medical diagnoses focus on the illness and NDs focus on the patient's response to a physiological, pathophysiologic, or mental health condition. To me this is a major difference in focus! Another useful source of information is the AWONN and scope and standards of nursing practice. They are on SSU reserve (second from bottom) .

Childbirth Class Evaluation: Attend the classes and submit evaluation

Home visit: You will do one family home visit with another student. The home visit will be a normal, healthy family that one of you provided care for in the hospital. Read this information before you go on the home visit. Be sure to have the patient sign the consent and give her a copy. Give a copy of the consent to your clinical instructor. Complete the Home Visit Clinical Documentation .

Clinical Simulation: Please show up at the Indian Valley Campus simulation at least 10 minutes early. Dress for clinical: Scrubs or uniform, name tag, shoes. This is a rich experience in decision-making, problem-solving, clinical decision-making, team work and communication. You won't do everything perfectly... even experienced nurses don't. Be engaged and have fun! Submit your Keystone Simulation Clinical Journal by 5 pm on the following Monday.

Grading: policy statement: Clinical performance will not be awarded a letter grade but will be evaluated on a Competency Met/Competency Unmet basis and the letter grade for the clinical course will be derived from associated clinical documentation (See below). Cathy Clark or Karen Clark determine if you have met the clinical evaluation criteria. We also obtain information from your resource nurses when we are evaluating your clinical performance. If we have concerns about your clinical performance we will talk with you immediately. Your N 345 grade (the women's health portion) is then based on your grades on the following clinical assignments:

Clinical Performance Evaluation: You are evaluated on your clinical performances based on the DON Clinical Performance Evaluation Tool. You ar to provide safe care, be prepared for clinical including always having your medication cards & IV calculations and a knowledge of clinical skills learned in your sophomore year. You are to organize your care so that you can provide safe care in a timely manner including charting the care you gave. You will also provide care for multiple patients.

Midterm evaluation: Please fill out (and bring with you!) the Clinical Performance Evaluation Tool before you meet individually with Karen Clark or Cathy Clark during a midterm post conference. Your evaluation is based on the hospital, simulation and home visit clinical experiences. This will take place the fourth week of your hospital rotation. Identify some specific goals you have for the remaining clinical days .Clinical assignments: All assignments are to be posted in your private N 345 Moodle discussion forum. For Sutter: These are to be posted on Friday evening by10 pm (except the Clinical Simulation). For Kaiser: these are to be posted by 5 pm on Saturday. If you are not able to complete and post by the deadline, you need to e-mail either Karen Clark (Kaiser) or Cathy Clark (Sutter) and let her know when you will be posting.

N 345 is a combined course containing both women's health and children's health content. This four unit course equals 180 clinical hours (90 hours in each portion). Students must receive a passing grade in both portions of the courses to proceed in the nursing curriculum. If a student does not pass a portion of the course, she/he may not proceed with the next portion or in the nursing major. Students must petition the nursing faculty for permission to retake only that portion of the course that they did not pass.

You are expected to attend all clinicals. If you are unable to attend a clinical due to illness or an extreme emergency, call Cathy Clark or Karen Clark, and the clinical site. This clinical time must be made up with an assignment that requires the same time commitment as the missed clinical. You may not come on a different clinical day to make up the absence.
